The company announced the signing of the first contract for the production of fully electric trains for the Leipzig-Chemnitz regional route-thanks to the built-in battery, the train will be able to travel a distance of up to 80 km on a non-electrified section of track.
By 2023, Alstom will produce eleven Coradia Continental BEMU trains that receive electricity and are recharged from a contact wire, and where there is no contact wire, they are powered by an autonomous source – a powerful battery.
The total cost of the contract for the production and maintenance of trains, signed until 2032, is 100 - 500 million euros.
The press release says that the production of electric trains will be established at the company's plant in Salzgitter, Lower Saxony. Batteries for the trains will be produced by the battery division of Alstom in the French city of Tarbes.
The specification for the batteries has not yet been presented, but it can be expected that their capacity will be several hundred kWh, which will be enough to travel from 80 to 120 km and operate for at least ten years. Externally, the electric trains will not change in comparison with the design of the Coradia Continental BEMU, which serve the routes in Dresden, Riese and Zwickau (Citadis cars and Prima H3 locomotive), only the battery on the roof will be added.
The length of the three-car train is 56 meters, it has 150 seats, the maximum speed is 160 km / h. In addition to standard commuter trains and new battery-powered trains, Alstom offers hydrogen fuel cell locomotives to railway operators, and two contracts have already been signed for a total of 41 such trains.
